Being a Disciplined, First Time Credit Card Holder

It is a very easy task to mess up financially when you get your first credit card. The temptation and responsibility that comes along with being a first time credit card user is endless. Never actually seeing any paper can deceive you into thinking there is more to spend than you can actually afford. The monthly statement is the only time reality sets in and before you know it your payments are late and your swimming in a see of late fees. This kind of debt is difficult to shake especially when your are not used to paying credit card bills.

Starting and keeping up with a budget from the get go will help you stay on track and will help avoid the D word. Starting off on a good note will set your habits for the future whether they are good or bad. Starting off on a bad note can shove you into such a deep hole it will take you years to dig yourself out of. When you are first starting out with a credit card, it is always a good idea to use it only in case of emergencies.
This will keep it simple and you out of debt. It is also an extremely smart idea to always try and have the money in advance for what you charge to your credit card. This act will allow you to keep up easily with your payments and build good credit in the process. This is made much easier when you do not carry your credit balance with you. This only gives you a false impression of how much money actually have, even though you may have the money at your disposal you don't necessarily need to spend it. This practice is a key element in becoming a disciplined credit card user.

Exceeding your limit with a credit card can be detrimental to a new credit card user. First timers do not typically have good interest rates. Most of them remain high in hopes that the holder will not spend too much money. To the lenders benefit, a lot of the time the new credit card holder is irresponsible and late fees occur. The careless act of spending too much on credit and not being able to pay on time can keep you from obtaining a lower interest rate.

A well thought out budget can be enormously valuable in staying ahead of debt. Keeping a close watch on what you spend will enable you to be absolutely positive you will have the money at the end of the month to make the payment on time or better yet early.

The goal in having a credit card is to obtain the lowest interest rate possible. This can only occur if you are a responsible credit card holder. Keeping close track of every transaction will guarantee your financial future. Learning how to be a conscientious spender early in your credit card career will allow for a solid credit history. So use that little piece of valuable plastic sparingly and always make your payments on time and you will have a lucrative credit card experience.
